Chitosan is a linear polysaccharide composed of randomly distributed β-(1-4)-linked D-glucosamine (deacetylated unit) and N-acetyl-D
-glucosamine (acetylated unit). It is made by treating shrimp and other crustacean shells with the alkali.
Chitosan has a number of commercial and possible biomedical uses. It can be used in agriculture as a seed treatment and biopesticide,
helping plants to fight off fungal infections. In winemaking it can be used as a fining agent, also helping to prevent spoilage. In industry,
it can be used in a self-healing polyurethane paint coating. In medicine, it may be useful in bandages to reduce bleeding, and as an
antibacterial agent; it can also be used to help deliver drugs through the skin.
More controversially, chitosan has been asserted to have used in limiting fat absorption, which would make it useful for dieting, but there
is evidence against this. Other uses of chitosan that have been researched include use as a soluble dietary fiber.

1. Agricultural use
In agriculture, chitosan powder is used primarily as a natural seed treatment and plant growth enhancer, and as an ecologically friendly
biopesticide substance that boosts the innate ability of plants to defend themselves against fungal infections. The natural biocontrol active
ingredients, chitin/chitosan, are found in the shells of crustaceans, such as lobsters, crabs, and shrimp, and many other organisms, including
insects and fungi. It is one of the most abundant biodegradable materials in the world.
2. Water filtration
Chitosan powder can also be used in water processing engineering as a part of a filtration process. Chitosan powder causes the fine sediment
particles to bind together and is subsequently removed with the sediment during sand filtration. It also removes phosphorus, heavy minerals,
and oils from the water. Chitosan is an important additive in the filtration process. Sand filtration apparently can remove up to 50% of the turbidity
alone, while the chitosan with sand filtration removes up to 99% turbidity. Chitosan has been used to precipitate caseins from bovine milk and
cheese making.
3. Winemaking & fungal source Chitosan
Chitosan has a long history of use as a fining agent in winemaking. Fungal source Chitosan has shown an increase in settling activity, reduction
of oxidized polyphenolics in juice and wine as well as the chelation and removal of copper (post-racking). Fungal-source Chitosan can also be
used in winemaking for the control of the spoilage yeast Brettanomyces. These products and uses are approved for European use by the EU
and OIV standards.
1. Agriculture Field
As a foliage fertilizer, fertilizer, water-soluble chitosan can be used in different periods the seedlings, buds, bearings, known as not a pesticide,
but a pesticide" and "not a fertilizer, but a fertilizer", can be used for seed treatment, soil improvement, and so on.
2. Paper Industry
Water-soluble chitosan can be used as a paper sizing agent, reinforcing agent, retention agent, an increase of paper strength, recovery of the
loss of pulp.
3. Feed Field
As feed additives, can inhibit and kill the harmful bacterium, improve animals' immunity.
4. Food Field
(1) Flavoring agent, Chitosan Oligosaccharides can be added to the spices, dairy products, and fruit juice, which can both enrich the taste of
products, and improve the nutrition.
(2) Food preservation, chitosan oligosaccharide can be applied in fruit and vegetable preservation because it keeps the fruit and vegetable fresh.
(3)Functional additive, chitosan oligosaccharide can be applied in Yoghourt, MIlk powder because it can adjust the intestinal microflora.
5. Cosmetic Field
Applicable to various cosmetics, such as emollient cream, shower gel, cleaning cream, mousse, advanced ointment frost, emulsion, and colloid
cosmetics, etc.
Medicine field As the chitosan is non-toxic, has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, hemostatic, and immune function, can be used as artificial skin,
the self-absorption of surgical sutures, medical dressing Branch, bone, tissue engineering scaffolds, enhance liver function, improve digestive
function, blood fat, lowering blood sugar, inhibiting tumor metastasis, and adsorption and complexation of heavy metals and can be excreted,
and so on, was vigorously applied to health food and drug additives.
6. Environmental protection field
Chitosan and its derivatives are a good flocculant for wastewater treatment and metal recovery from metal-containing wastewater; in the textile field:
as a mordant, health care fabric, sizing agents, printing, and dyeing.
7. Field of tobacco
Tobacco sheets are used as adhesives, low-tar filters, and so on.
