Ritonavir is an orally effective inhibitor of human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) and human immunodeficiency virus-2 (HIV-2) aspartic . Blocking the enzyme promotes the production of morphologically mature HIV particles The required polyprotein keeps HIV particles in an immature state, thereby slowing down the spread of HIV in cells, preventing the occurrence of a new round of infection and delaying the development of the disease. Ritonavir-sensitive to zidovudine and HIV strains resistant to zidovudine and saquinavir are generally effective.
The main usage Ritonavir is to treat patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), specifically Type 1, the more dangerous and prevalent type of HIV. Usually, Ritonavir and Lopinavir are combined in a tablet or in a liquid solution to make the treatment more effective.
